Day 2,This will be Day 1 of the hiking trip. You’ll be taken to your starting point at the foot of the famous Sani Pass.

After breakfast you will be on your way to the Sani Pass road, where you will make your way to the trail head. From here you will be guided by route markers (white footprints on trees, rocks or poles along the route) These footprints will give you the directions you need to get to your end destination. The first day from Sani Pass to Pholela Hut is 13.3 Km and will take you approximately 4 ½ - 6 hours including rest stops. One of the rest stops will be Ngwena Pool, an enchanting, deep blue-grey natural dam. Have a rest on the large boulders while drinking the fresh water, as all the water in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site is drinkable. Use the tree stump cut in half to cross the pool. From the rest spot the trail follows the trout beck stream, cross the stream with a hanging bridge . Follow the trail past the campsite to Pholela Hut, which is an old farmhouse with 30 bunk beds in four rooms. There is a toilet and bathroom with 2 showers and a basin. When reaching Pholela Hut, you should report to the Cobham Office. You could complete the hike as a day trip or start a four day trail from here and book caves to sleep in instead of huts. You can also camp at the campsites.

Day 3,The Mzimkhulwana Hut nestles alongside one of the tributaries close to a clear pool, where you will spend your second night.

Today you will hike from Pholela Hut to Mzimkhulwana Hut,which will take you approximately 3½ hours including rests. Start off by following the trail by  walking through a protea woodland and experience a breathtaking view on a forest patch in a gorge below. Cross a small stream and continue on a bridge that leads to the Mzimkhulwana River that seperates you from the Mzimkhulwana Hut. The Hut consists of five rooms with three bunk beds in each room. Since day 2 consists of quite a short hike, there is lots of time to spend the afternoon at the pool on the Siphongweni River or scouting the surrounding area.

Day 4,Experience the pleasant vistas on the long climb towards the Little Bamboo Mountain.

Day 3 of your hike meanders along a plateau between Little Bamboo Mountain and Bamboo Mountain and leads through a populated valley to a couple of rondavels at the base of the Garden Castle Mountain. The plateau cuts through an area of rough beauty and bizarrely eroded rock. The path passes by Crane Tarn, a small mountain lake where you maybe lucky enough to see cranes. Follow the path to Winterhoek Hut, which consists of eight rondavels. One rondavel consists of half a wall and a bench around the inside. The site is very inviting under the peak of Garden Castle and sheltered by the oak trees. Today’s hike will take you up to 5 ½ hours with rest stops.

Day 5,Make your way up the slopes of Garden Castle, and overnight at Swiman Hut.

On day 4, the trail does not follow the mountains to the east. It goes along Garden Castle and along the crest of a ridge stretching to the north, heading towards the escarpment. The trail passes through typical highland grassland which is very rich in wildflowers in spring and summer. From Black Eagle Pass you have a good 180 degree view onto the Drakensberg escarpment.. At this stage you have climbed 300 m in altitude and your reward is a lovely view onto the valley. Keep your eyes open for both the Verreaux’s (Black) Eagle and the Bearded Vulture as this is their breeding and feeding range. Make your way to Swiman Hut, an old forestry house. On the verandah you will have an amazing view of Swiman Peak. Today’s hike will take you up to 6 hours with rest stops.

Day 6,Make your way  to the Langalibalela cave, after which you will reach the end of the trail

Your last day of hiking consists of a hike that will take you 5 hours with a rest. You will walk from Swiman Hut to Bushman’s nek. You will pass over a ridge into the narrow valley of the Mzimude River , cross the wooden bridge and arrive at Langalibalele Cave below a fire lookout tower.  Make your way to Busman’s Nek by following the path. Here you can overnight at the Bushman’s Nek Hut.
